Allan Mitchell originally hails from Sydney Australia (b. 1949) and now resides about 500 km north in Armidale (NSW). Al is a chemist fascinated with the wonder of humanity’s drives into unknown realms and its struggles to comprehend the incomprehensible and communicate what it finds in meaningful ways. He is a great reader of material providing perspectives in science and history and, through his work, has provided much in-house scientific material for students and researchers as well as publishing his own articles in the scientific press but has long harboured a desire to burst into print with his other many and varied interests.
Al also appreciates a good mystery and has so-far authored five books based on the exploits of the well-known and quite topical character of Sherlock Holmes. Book #5 (SH & the Ley Line Murders) has been released this month (Sept 14, 2017).
One of Al’s interest strands has led him to preparing a quite large compilation of historical world-wide weights and measures and to embark on two general interest works addressing the material in humanist terms - ‘The Cubit from ‘Ell’ and ‘Ezekiel’s Rod’; another has led to a light-hearted work on the elements of the Periodic Table (‘The Chemistry Saga’). He has previously compiled a cryptic newspaper crossword, ‘The Riddler’, for several seasons and submitted articles on word derivations (another of his interests), generally ‘Wait for the Word’ and technically ‘The Word on Chemistry’.
Another current project is ‘Allosaurus Footprints’ which is a series of stories in verse format on various notable characters who Al finds worthy of celebration. Al is writing this as Al O’Saurus, a moniker reflecting the fact that he is somewhat of an old dinosaur these days, and that he has significant Hibernian ancestry.
A book of science fiction is now complete and undergoing pre-submission checks.
