Hi friend! I’m Andy Ptacek, proud wifey to my hunky firefighter for 16 years and mama to a couple crazy boys, Tavin 12 and Grant 9. We live in beautiful Glendale, Arizona in our 1973 fixer-upper on a nice chunk of land where we have big dreams of watching our lives unfold in our finally-forever-home.
Although this all sounds very “white picket fence,” my life started out anything but.
Raised predominantly by my single working mom, I worked odd jobs and retail from the age of 13. As I entered college, I worked full-time to cover food and rent while paying for tuition at Arizona State University with the settlement money I was awarded from a childhood sexual abuse ruling.
Without taking much time to really experience college, I graduated a semester early in with a B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication from ASU’s prestigious Walter Cronkite School, and let’s not forget the minor in Interpersonal Communication so I could learn how to be a high functioning introvert 😉
As an intern producer at the local ABC affiliate, I became a Rocky Mountain Emmy nominee, but soon traded TV for Public Relations, working at one of Arizona’s top PR agencies. But about halfway through my first pregnancy, I realized that climbing the ladder at a 9-5 wasn’t my dream anymore.
Instead of pitching stories to newspapers, magazines, and TV, I became fascinated with online marketing and co-founded Liquis Digital, back when websites were built by hand and social media was just being born.
7 YEARS, A FAMILY, AND A THRIVING BUSINESS LATER – I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH BRAIN CANCER.
It rocked everything. First, in a scary way as I faced the reality of my mortality.
Then, in a grateful way as I was spurred to recreate the authentic life I was always meant for.
Perspective taught me that I wasn’t damaged. The old me had grown into something new, something better.
My experience with brain cancer grew my self-awareness, my ability to love, my patience, my grit, my world view, my self view, and my faith.
I believe we all are capable of this transformation, even without a massively traumatic experience or terminal illness to shake us awake.
