Welcome to Barbara Rein’s nightmares. Her book, Tales from the Eerie Canal: 22 Stories of the Delightfully Dark and Creepy, won the Florida Writers Association’s 2021 Royal Palm Literary Award for “Best Published Book of the Year.” In2ition Magazine named her “2021 Short Story Writer of the Year.” She writes “horror lite” short stories (goosebumps, not gore) culled from a childhood of macabre fairy tales and endless episodes of Twilight Zone. Barbara's writing career began in second grade with a poem and short story published in Junior Scholastics Magazine. But her book series, Cassandra McGillicuddy’s Adventures in Outer Space, complete with stick figure drawings, was panned by her fourth-grade teacher. Mortified, Barbara stopped writing, keeping her stories in her head for years. One day she opened her laptop and out they poured. Well, Mrs. Atchison, look at her now—an award-winning and Amazon best-selling author. Barbara also writes chuckle-inducing essays inspired by the quirks and oddities that bounce her way. A Floridian transplanted from New York, Barbara admits to being dachshund-obsessed. The long dog occasionally shows up in her short stories, though more often on her sofa, bed, and lap.
