Billy J. Bourg grew up dirt poor in Southeast Louisiana, the middle of three children. He was raised by a single mother and was home schooled from the age of nine. At twelve, he began working full time to help support his family while doing schoolwork at night. During those early years, he fell in love with reading. Some of his most memorable reads were The Swiss Family Robinson, Where the Red Fern Grows, and The Call of the Wild, while his most influential reads were by Louis L’Amour, who—through his books about the Old West—taught a poor fatherless boy how to become a man. At the age of nineteen, and after working mostly construction for seven years, Bourg embarked upon what would become a highly successful thirty-year-career in law enforcement, while simultaneously pursuing a writing career at night. Bourg excelled in every position he worked, which included as a patrol deputy, a detective, a detective sergeant, and a police academy instructor. He served on SWAT, the Explosives Search Team, and the Homicide Response Team, while also founding and commanding his department’s Police Sniper Team. Additionally, he boxed professionally and trained in martial arts his entire life. Bourg retired as the chief investigator for a D.A.’s office and moved to East Tennessee, where he writes hard-boiled mysteries under the name BJ Bourg, and middle-grade fiction under his real name. The highlight of his life is spending time with his beautiful wife, wonderful children, adorable grandchildren, and lovable German shepherds. If asked, Bourg will say that every success in his life can be attributed to one thing: READING. He firmly believes that it’s one of the cornerstones of life, and he hopes his books will inspire young children to embark upon a lifetime of reading.
