Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Bo Miles lost both of his thumbs as a baby and required hand reconstruction surgery. Although he only had 8 fingers he began piano studies at age 15. He received his first classical training from his high school music teacher and the many great local players. He dedicated himself to be a professional musician at that point, beginning a long association with reading and studying all styles of music. He went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in music education from West Virginia State University, while also teaching piano to the youth through an after school program. While at WVSU, he spent five years under the tutelage of the renowned classical pianist Dr. Charlotte Giles and renowned jazz pianist Bob Thompson. He worked in and around Charleston, West Virginia with a wide variety of jazz and Christian artists. In 2007 he led the frontier for local musicians to head online teaching and performing. Bo has also been an active interdisciplinary artist; creating the sub-genre “piano rap”, playing the piano while rapping at the same time. He lives in Charleston with his wife and two children. He spends his time teaching music for a local school district. He also does freelance work as a jazz pianist throughout the tri-state, serves as musical director for his church, teaches, composes and develops books and video courses.
