I've always had a love affair with books. My parents had me reading early, and even then I began to amass a book collection. The collection has grown and changed since, but it's always been books for me. So it should be no surprise that I eventually began to write.
I grew up in the age of Sputnik, an era when anyone with the slightest competence in math was encouraged to enter what we now call the STEM field. Science. Technology, Engineering. Math. And so I became a structural engineer. But writing of various sorts was always there. I wrote letters for my bosses, became a specification writer, and editor of our agency's newsletter. Eventually I managed a small literary journal, the Rural Sophisticate, then based in Georgia.
The fiction-writing bug hit me - hard. I took it seriously and began writing short stories, took writing seminars and classes, and finally began a novel. Then a great break: I won a place as North Carolina Writer in Residence at Peace College, under Doris Betts' guiding hand. After moving to North Carolina, I entered UNC-Asheville's MLA program and, after focusing on creative writing, I secured that treasured degree. Success in writing is a challenge, but I've had my share of awards and prizes. Now I'm beginning to share writing opportunities with others as an editor and publisher.
