Bradford C. Berk, MD, PhD is a Distinguished University Professor at the University of Rochester. Dr. Berk was recruited to the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) in 1998 as Chief of the Cardiology Division. Previously, he served on the faculties of Harvard Medical School, Emory University, and the University of Washington. Dr. Berk was the Chairman of Medicine from 2001 until 2006. In 2006 Dr. Berk was chosen after a national search to be CEO of URMC. In May of 2009, Dr. Berk suffered a serious spinal cord injury after a bicycle accident. He returned to his CEO duties in 2010 with a new perspective on patient care, health provider – patient interactions, and neurorehabilitation. He then focused on cultural transformation at URMC; promoting patient-family centered care and addressing the challenges of health care reform. In 2015, Dr. Berk stepped down as CEO and became the founding director of the University of Rochester Neurorestoration Institute (URNI). The mission of the URNI is to bring the highest quality multidisciplinary care and most innovative approaches to restore function in individuals who have suffered damage to their brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. Dr. Berk maintains an active research program that includes the role of inflammation in blood vessels leading to heart attack and stroke, new therapeutic approaches to spinal cord injury, and clinical research trials to promote recovery after stroke. Dr. Berk has held many advisory positions and has served on the boards of national organizations including the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, numerous international scientific committees, and the boards of several biotech companies. Dr. Berk has published more than 300 articles, chapters, and books; and is routinely asked to present his work at national and international meetings.
