Until recently, I paid the bills working as an IT Security Consultant, focusing on helping clients secure their environments against the type of people you’d rather not have your personal data. I got to work with some amazing people, and go to some awesome (and not so awesome) places, but also spent nights in random hotels. And when you spend over 250 nights in hotels, everything on TV starts to look the same. So on one particularly dead night in 2013, I foolishly decided I could write something more entertaining and started banging away on my laptop.
Like many authors, my first novel was... a learning experience. I played around with the story, but it was as more of an escape than an attempt at writing a book. I started querying agents far too early and ended up getting over 60 rejection letters before moving on to other projects.
As the years wore on and I learned more about cyber security, I grew frustrated with the depiction of hacking in books and movies. After one particularly egregious portrayal, I threw my remote at the wall, headed back to my keyboard and made a solemn vow to write something better (seeing a theme yet?).
Eight months later, my debut novel, Ransomware, was finished.
Some people will call me crazy for leaving a stable job with nothing but a single, unpublished novel, but I’ve been incredibly lucky to have a fantastic support network that has encouraged me to pursue this crazy dream. Without them, I never would have had the courage to make such a drastic change. So thank you to everyone who has believed in me, and I hope you enjoy Ransomware starting 8/31!
