My interest in antique firearms began during my college days, with particular emphasis on guns used in the trans-Mississippi west of the 1800s. I've been more concerned with how the various arms were employed and what their owners thought of their performance than in their mechanical function and design. Fortunately my co-author of two volumes on this subject, Louis A. Garavaglia, possesses substantial talent as a firearms designer so our interests complemented each others. Recently I've taken a break from researching antique firearms and am completing a book on Civil War mascots and war horses. A secondary interest has been in U.S. military aviation and I retired as chief curator/deputy director of the U.S. Air Force Museum.
