Chris Bates is an American who has lived and worked in Asia for over 40 years, fluent in Mandarin and recently retired as Partner in Charge of the topflight global executive search firm Heidrick & Struggles Taiwan office. His translations from 俠義英雄傳 Tales of Chivalrous and Altruistic Heroes have been published in The Journal of Asian Martial Art and his insights on negotiation have been published in Harvard’s Negotiation Journal. He is also a twice published book author on Asian topics. In 1993, his first novel The Wave Man was picked up by Times Editions (Singapore). It is now available as a Kindle ebook. Times Editions later approached him to write Culture Shock! Taiwan within their popular series of culture and etiquette guides. This is now in its fourth updated edition under the Marshall Cavendish imprint. Rise of the Water Margin is his second novel and benefited from his deep knowledge of China and the semiconductor industry in Asia. Bates pursued his career in Asia in order to be able to train in Asian martial arts. He holds a high rank in American Bando, and is a member of the Yizong Tangshoudao lineage of Xingyi, Bagua and Taiji having trained directly with Master Hong Yixiang and his sons. The publication of Bates' translation of Blurred Boundaries 模糊的疆界 a cultural history and biography of Master Hong written by his son, Zehan, is highly anticipated in Fall 2023.
