Courtney B. Lance, a native Chicagoan and the daughter of a civil rights activist, was formally introduced to wrongful conviction when her long-time friend Nikki Pope asked her to collaborate on this project. Courtney, who is familiar with injustice and disparate treatment, agreed to partner with her friend. Courtney was moved by the stories of these victimized men and women who committed no crime, yet have spent, in some instances, half their lives in jail. Assembling these stories has been a rewarding experience for Courtney and is proof of the fortitude and strength of the human spirit that these men and women possess. Courtney is a blogger, cooks and sings to her husband, and for others, to keep joy in her life. Courtney is honored to receive, along with her friend, the 2015 Media Award from the Northern California Innocence Project for their Pruno, Ramen and a Side of Hope; her first book.
