As a girl I was transported to other worlds on the thin pages of books. I lived to read. After school, I’d rush home to travel somewhere other than Sylvania, Ohio. These explorations sparked a lifelong journey of reading, writing and traveling.
I always knew I wanted to be a writer. I had no idea what that meant, and when my parents gave me a powder blue Smith Corona typewriter, I adored it. But I had no way to start writing. Today, as a coach and teacher, I see this same dilemma in my clients – the burning desire to write but no clue how to start.
I still visit the library and bring home stacks of books to devour. And now, I’m an author. It’s my life’s work to help others navigate their creative journeys.
It wasn’t until my 20s before I learned how to access the stories inside me through free writing. This liberating process gave me a wild grace I’d never felt before. When writing, I moved, I grooved. After writing, I felt alive and sexy. I heard my voice for the first time, and I liked it.
Writing felt magical. Writing was power. This was something I needed to share.
I have always been compelled to help others. As a bookseller, I loved recommending books. As a creative adventurer, I inspire others to claim their own authority and live on their own terms. I don’t want writing hopefuls to wait one more minute before accessing their creative juju.
I began teaching poetry courses in Denver. I discovered the coaching profession and became a certified coach. Since 1996, I’ve had the privilege of guiding thousands of writers to take up the pen and release their creative juju. Together, my clients and I have found our way past daunting obstacles to creative authenticity. We relish the power we find on the other side of the blank page.
Buoyed by the transformative act of writing, we bring our ideas into form. We become stronger, better versions of ourselves each time we believe our vision and not our fears. We launch businesses, blogs and books. We dare to share our hearts with our audiences.
As a coach, I have written hundreds of articles about writing and the creative process. I've used my coaching skills to complete a book, Create Your Writer's Life, and five e-books on the creative process and creative travel.
My life's work to date is my novel, Chasing Sylvia Beach, to be released in summer, 2012. It is the story of a young woman who is searching for female role models for how to live an unconventional life. She finds herself in Paris, 1937, where she has to approach her heroine, Sylvia Beach, in order to survive and find her way home.
Writing this novel has been the most challenging and empowering creative journey I have taken.
We take risks because the personal payoffs – self-knowledge, creative confidence and personal integrity – are more compelling than our fears.
We’re in this daring adventure together. Every day is different. Every piece we write can transform us and our readers. I wouldn’t do anything else.
