David R Shlim MD is one of the most respected travel medicine physicians in the world. Drawn to the Himalayas to volunteer at a high-altitude rescue post, he later moved to Kathmandu where he ran the world’s first destination travel medicine clinic for fifteen years. Early in his stay he decided to offer free medical care at a Tibetan Buddhist monastery, befriending the head lama, Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche, and gradually discovering the benefits of Tibetan Buddhism, both personally, and in his medical practice. His study of training in compassion led to collaborating on the first book that provided detailed Tibetan Buddhist insights into compassion for Western medical professionals. The book is called Medicine and Compassion. The research that he pioneered in travel medicine made his clinic the most famous travel medicine clinic in the world. In 2013, he was elected president of the International Society of Travel Medicine, an organization with 4000 members in 100 countries. He also served ten years as the Medical Director of the Himalayan Rescue Association and was awarded a certificate for his lifetime contribution to rescue in Nepal by the Prime Minister of Nepal in 1998. Dr. Shlim has spent the last twenty years lecturing and teaching about how it is possible to train in compassion, including in-person retreats, online study programs, and a medical school course in Ireland. He currently lives in Jackson Hole, Wyoming where he practices travel medicine and teaches Tibetan Buddhism. He served as a tour doctor for The Rolling Stones for three years, traveling with band to Canada, the U.S., Japan, China, and Australia.
