Diane Helentjaris, a finalist in the 2020 Icelandic Writers Retreat Alumni Award, writes about unsung lives. A native of Dayton, Ohio, she grew up in nearby Medway before going north to college. At Michigan State, she earned her BA cum laude in Interdisciplinary Humanities, an MD, and - at the University of Michigan - an MPH. After a career in clinical and public health medicine, she returned to her humanities roots to write. Her historical novel The Indenture of Ivy O'Neill won the 2024 Maryland Writers' Association Novel competition in the Romance and Historical category. Her latest book "I Ain't Afraid" — The World of Lulu Bell Parr, Wild West Cowgirl is a biography. She lives with her family in the Piedmont of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains.
