Diane Owens Prettyman is the author of the romantic adventure story Thin Places and the twentieth-century historical novel Redesigning Emma. She is also a frequent contributor to the Austin American-Statesman. Her third book Love is for the Birds was released in October of 2024. This novel combines contemporary romance with eco-fiction for an entertaining beach read set on the Texas Gulf.
Hurricane Harvey’s devastating blow to Port Aransas inspired her to write Love is for the Birds. Though the town in her book is fictional, details in the story are based on her many trips to Port Aransas, Texas and the nearby Aransas Pass Wildlife Refuge. Whooping Cranes play a central role in her story. Many people don’t realize cranes mate for life, that fact, and their resilience as an endangered species, make them the perfect metaphor for a novel about recovery and second chances.
In addition to the publications listed above, Diane has published articles in numerous periodicals including Texas, Oregon Coast, Oxygen, and Whispers from Heaven. She is a member of the Writers’ League of Texas and the Women’s Fiction Writers Association. Her husband and two black standard poodles provide her room and board in Austin.
