John “Divine G” Whitfield is the real-life inspiration behind Colman Domingo’s character in the hit movie Sing Sing. He was also a co-writer of the movie, an executive producer and made a cameo appearance. As depicted in the movie, Divine G served 25 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit, despite finding overwhelming evidence of his actual innocence. While in prison, he co-founded Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA), a program that helps incarcerated people grow through creative expression. A multiple PEN American Center award winning writer, Divine G has eight published novels (seven of which have been adapted into screenplays), five audio books, the winner of the 2008 Tacenda Literary Award for best play, and was also quoted by the United Nations in its UN Report of the Special Rapporteur on the right of education of persons in detention (A/HRC/11/8, pg. 6, ¶ 11 - 2 April 2009). Since his release in 2012, Divine G founded Divine G Entertainment and continues to fight for his exoneration and has a Conviction Review Complaint pending in the Kings County DA’s Conviction Review Unit (CRU). This complaint has been lingering in that unit for over seven years.
