Donald Hammond, born in Troy, New York, grew up in the vibrant landscapes of Washington state and Southern California. His early exposure to diverse cultures and perspectives shaped his unique outlook. Despite leaving high school early, Donald entered college at just 15 in the early 1970s, where he discovered his lifelong passion for computers. To avoid the draft, Donald enlisted in the U.S. Navy, spending 12 ½ years as a nuclear-trained Electrician's Mate on submarines. These global voyages not only broadened his scientific knowledge but also refined his sharp, dry wit—qualities that now inform his approach to science fiction, which he writes with a grounding in hard science. Donald married his lifelong love at 18, and together they've raised three children and now enjoy six grandchildren, though from afar. Their home is filled with feline companions, as Donald and his wife are deeply involved in cat rescue and fostering with Clowder House Feline Rescue, focusing on special needs cats—the toughest cases.
