I am a retail pharmacist who endlessly counsels patients on why it’s so
important to take medications on time. Somewhere between my
college elective teaching me to write medication labels at a third-grade
level and a woman standing at my consultation window arguing with
me about why her birth control pills are not early (both her and her
boyfriend takes one every day for “extra” protection), I realized this
(Healthcare) isn’t working.
Fast forward to a busy-as-fuck day in the pharmacy, and a patient calls
me on the phone. Gasping for air, he requests I get his rescue inhaler
ready for his COPD as soon as possible. My technician rushes and
prioritizes his prescription, and within 5 minutes, this guy is at my
drive-through window.
While smoking a cigarette, he asks, “Is my shit
ready?” I looked at him and screamed in my mind, “fuck the adults!”
However, bad habits from adults pass down to their kids, just like
breast milk. To save the generation to come, I started writing
children’s pharmacy folk tales, hoping that one day, parents would
read them to their kids as bedtime stories. In turn, because the books
are easy to understand, the parents might be able to teach their kids
complex medical information.
Because kids grow up understanding
obesity, diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, etc., the hope
is that they will also learn the lifestyle changes needed to prevent these diseases easily.
While I work to refine my second book, included with this cover letter
is my first of 5 books. In today’s day and age, kids glean more
information from movies and audiobooks than they do from
hardcovers.
