I was born on the picturesque West Indian Island of Grenada, also known as the 'Isle of Spice.' But it was in the concrete jungle of Harlem, NYC where I spent my childhood and teenage years. Fast forward to my thirties, and I found myself in the Dominican Republic for the first time. I was having a great time, but I felt like a total embarrassment, with just a 'Hola' in my Spanish vocabulary. Can you believe it? Even the pleasantries like 'How are you?' and 'Please' were foreign to me. As I sat there at an all-inclusive resort, trying to communicate with a couple of ladies doing my manicure and pedicure, we just looked at each other and smiled. It was clear that I needed to take Señora Rivera's Spanish class more seriously back in the day. I decided to step outside the resort and experience the real Dominican life. It was like entering a whole new world, where hardly anyone spoke English. Despite the language barrier, I had a blast thanks to a kind-hearted local who helped me get by. But as I traveled more, I realized I was missing out on so much. Not being able to understand the locals, the music, the culture...it was like I was blindfolded. So I made a life-changing decision to learn Spanish. My journey to learn Spanish was full of ups and downs, but it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. And it led me to create Gritty Spanish, a reading and listening program that immerses you in real-life urban stories that are edgy, passionate, and downright entertaining. These stories are based on my own experiences growing up in an urban community, so you know they're authentic. Check out our website, www.grittyspanish.com, and be sure to visit our blog for some awesome free Spanish learning content. Who knows? You might just be speaking Spanish like a native in no time!"
