Elizabeth Poynter has been 'making up stories' since before she could write. Having studied Chinese and lived in China in the '80s, spent 7 years in Hiroshima and a couple in Bavaria, and visited at the last count 22 different countries in 4 continents - she may have forgotten a couple there - she has now settled back in her native West Yorkshire. Her writing reflects her range of interests: her science fiction focuses on alien cultures, their languages, customs and mythologies, and her latest, non-fiction book explores human hygiene through the ages and around the world. Language, history, culture - aren't these the essence of being human?
