Eric Holter began blazing his creative trail while still in high school back in 1986. He ditched his grocery store job and hung out a shingle as an artist for hire. Then, a few years later, after graduating from Rhode Island School of Design in 1991, he began his professional career as a freelance illustrator. Soon after, he had an opportunity to acquire a letter-press shop, and so he added fine printing to his resume.
Shockingly, fine-press printing was not lucrative enough to support a family, and so he got a job in the city doing print production work at a local advertising agency from 1993–1996. In that short period, he experienced the radical transition from old-fashioned print production methods (stats, rubylith, photo type, paste-up mechanicals) to digital pre-press production. By the end of that brief era, his creative path diverged to follow after the newfangled world wide web trail and he started his first firm, Newfangled Graphics.
Newfangled is one of the few original web design firms that has survived both the dot-com bubble burst in 2000 and after 9-11, and is still in business today. Eric sold Newfangled to one of his employees and began consulting other similar firms in the business side of creative entrepreneurship.
Today Eric mentors other creative entrepreneurs, especially those just starting out down the trail, or beginning the ascent to hiring their first few employees. You can find other articles by Eric, as well as his podcast 5 Minutes on Creative Entrepreneurship, and his subscription-based training materials at ericholter.com.
