An audio book version of "The Voices at CERN" is now available on Amazon and elsewhere.
On June 13, "The Voices at CERN" was honored as a semi-finalist in the 2014 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award competition in the science fiction group. This represents being selected as one of the top five science fiction books in this year's contest. While "The Voices at CERN" did not advance as the finalist in the science fiction category, Mr. Clermont wishes to thank everyone who reviewed, considered, and sampled the excerpt published by Amazon. "The Voices at CERN" will be reviewed further and might move toward consideration as one of the best science fiction novels published through Amazon in 2013. This profile will be updated as the competition moves forward.
Franklin Clermont has a long history as a writer of non-fiction. In "The Voices At CERN", Mr. Clermont has turned to the realm of science fiction to create a work that offers mystery and action, as well as raising important philosophical questions. While the discovery of the Higgs boson (aka the God particle) has made headlines, "The Voices At CERN" goes beyond the recent facts and leaps to a next level of discovery, and asks "What if... ?"
While not a physicist by education or occupation, Mr. Clermont sets out in the format of a novel the basics of the work of scientists at the Large Hadron Collider in very easily understood terms, and sets the stage for a suspense-filled thriller. Along the way, the work raises fundamental questions about the universe, and humanity's place in it. In a recent interview, Mr. Clermont noted, "I tried throughout the writing process to maintain a balance between scientific accuracy and telling an engaging and accessible story. I hope I've hit that happy medium."
In another interview since the publication of "The Voices At CERN", Mr. Clermont remarked, "You don't need to know how warp drive works to enjoy Star Trek. You don't need to to know how a light saber works to enjoy Star Wars. In a similar vein, you don't need to know how the Large Hadron Collider works to enjoy this novel. It's enough to accept the fact that amazing discoveries are being made at CERN about the Higgs boson and other aspects of physics, and then go on to the 'What if..?' that the novel poses. Even if you can't distinguish a proton from a photon, you can relish the philosophical questions the book raises and discusses, along with appreciating the mystery and action elements."
Interviewed in December, Mr. Clermont noted, "There has been an increase in interest in "The Voices At CERN" as a Christmas gift. People are finding the convenience of giving either the paperback version or the eBook very appealing. I think it speaks well of the gift-giver if they complement the intellect of the recipient by giving them a thought-provoking work of fiction."
Mr. Clermont announced in January 2014 that he has begun work on a sequel to "The Voices At CERN". The sequel, with the working title "The Terror at CERN", will pick up the concepts and themes of the first work. Mr. Clermont commented "I intend the sequel to stand on its own as a work of science fiction. But a reader might better appreciate the sequel if they have explored the ideas and action of the first book."
