Survival at Starvation Lake was his first novel. It was published on July 19, 2010. Tragically, on the same day his daughter Sarah Miller lost her Marine Corps Engineer husband Paul Miller to a road side bomb in Afghanistan. Freedom has never been free, it has always been paid for with blood. The day after his death it was decided to dedicate the sequel in Paul's honor.
Sarah is a Graphic Designer for Marine Corps Community Services and designed all the covers for Gary's novels.
Before Survival at Starvation Lake was published it was read by over a hundred people. Many of these people were people that weren't know to the author. There were friends of friends. This book is only a novel but many people have emailed that it has helped them understand things that has happened in their own lives. The book is not sad but many men and most women have said that parts of it brought tears to their eyes.
In 2012 a sequel was published called Lost at Starvation Lake. It has won the Silver Metal in the Reader Favorite Awards. It was of course dedicated to the author's late son in law, Marine Corps Engineer Paul Miller. Sarah has remarried. Her new husband is also a Marine and has safely returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan.
A third book has been published called Mission: Starvation Lake. Although a series, each book is a stand alone book so they don't need to be read in order to understand what is going on.
