Hans Peter Brunner is a distinguished international banker with over 45 years of experience, having built a remarkable career across Switzerland, China, Hong Kong and Singapore. In 1985, he made history as the first Swiss banker in China when he opened the Credit Suisse office in Beijing. His leadership and vision were pivotal as he later transitioned to Hong Kong, where he oversaw the expansion of the business into one of the most successful international branches of Credit Suisse.
In 1997, Hans Peter took on the role of Chief Operating Officer for Coutts Asia in Singapore. His strategic expertise propelled him to the position of CEO of Coutts International in 2000, where he led the organization from Switzerland, navigating complex financial environments with skill and acumen. In 2010, he returned to Singapore as CEO Asia for BSI Bank, where he actively contributed to building a robust franchise with the support of over 100 former Coutts colleagues.
However, Hans Peter's career faced unprecedented challenges when the 1MDB scandal erupted in 2015. As part of the subsequent criminal investigation in Singapore, he and five of BSI's senior officers found themselves under scrutiny.The investigation not only stripped Hans Peter of his passport for two and a half years but also left a lasting impact on his reputation and finances. After a gruelling five and a half years, he was completely exonerated. This experience opened his eyes to the treacherous nature of internal politics and trust in the banking industry. The personal betrayals he faced from individuals he once considered friends were particularly poignant, yet he emerged with a renewed perspective on loyalty and integrity.
Throughout this tumultuous period, Hans Peter drew strength from his family. He remains eternally grateful to his wife, Katharina, and their two sons, who stood steadfastly by his side and exemplified true loyalty amidst adversity. The experience also illuminated his genuine friendships, distinguishing between those who truly supported him and others who retreated in times of crisis
In the past nine years, Hans Peter has transformed his expertise gained from the 1MDB incident into a passion for eduction and storytelling. He has become a leading expert on the 1MDB fraud, diligently researching the case and leveraging both public and private insights.
His current project involves reimagining a fictional account of Joh Low, the alleged mastermind behind the scandal that tainted not just 1MDB but also global financial institutions.
