Harold Walker is retired from the U.S. Marine Corps where in 1969-70 he served in Vietnam as a CH-46 Helicopter Pilot. Following active duty, he remained in the Marine Corps Reserve, as a UH-1N “Huey” Helicopter pilot where his reserve squadron, HML-776, was activated for Desert Storm. He retired from the Marine Corps Reserve in 1996 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His parallel civilian occupation was in federal law enforcement. Upon retirement, he became a licensed private investigator. Walker's first book, Murder on the Floodways, was published in 2014 and much has happened since then. It has become the "go to book" regarding the history of that region in Southeast Missouri called the Bootheel. The story is a living testament to the lives of those who were touched by the brutal killing and the books popularity has not waned. Amazon Kindle has made the book available to those counties Dunklin, Pemiscot, Stoddard and New Madrid in which book stores are scarce. "Expats" from the Bootheel throughout the United States have reconnected with their roots through the pages of this book as they invariably recognize the unique cotton culture from which their families sprang. As stated in the book, The Bootheel is a very special place, unlike any other area of the South, being that it is, "An orphan from Arkansas and a step-child to Missouri." Walker's second book, The Grotto Book One, published in July, 2018 is the first of two books about becoming a Marine helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War. It is learning how to fly in combat and meeting living heroes and personalities who made up that group of dare devils who flew into the most harrowing portions of the war during the period known as Vietnamization & Redeployment, when they knew they would not return home as victors. The lives lost, the heroes made and the quiet and turbulent times, when men from 18 to 25 years of age flew and crewed the CH-46D medium lift helicopter. The book is about the period not covered by Ken Burn's epic chronicle. For more information , visit Walker's Facebook page: Harold G. Walker - Author. The Grotto Book Two is under construction...expected to be published in September 2019.
