Ivan Malekin is a prolific producer, director and editor whose short and feature films have screened and won awards all over the world. He has been making films since 2007 and is currently considered part of the Australian New Wave of indie filmmakers. He graduated with a Bachelor in Professional Writing and Editing and spent time as a freelance journalist and would-be novelist before being struck by the filmmaking bug.
He would establish Nexus Production Group in 2007 in Melbourne, a filmmaking collective driven by creativity, originality and passion. Today Nexus is based in Malta with team members in New York and Melbourne, as well as regular collaborators all over the world.
As the founder and director of the MADE IN MELBOURNE FILM FESTIVAL from 2009-2016, and SHORT CUT MONTHLY FILM NITE from 2010-2012, Ivan was heavily involved in the Melbourne independent film scene. He also curated the cinema component of monthly film, comedy, and burlesque variety event THEATRE NUEVO (2014), and has been a guest curator at a variety of events, including WHITE NIGHT MELBOURNE (2014) DOWN UNDER BERLIN (2015), and Swanpool Community Cinema (2015-2016).
In 2016 and 2017 he produced the black and white independent feature film CHOIR GIRL, as well as co-producing and co-directing the ambitious improvised feature FRIENDS, FOES & FIREWORKS in one night over New Year's Eve, together with his filmmaking partner Sarah Jayne. FRIENDS, FOES & FIREWORKS went onto a brief cinema release in Melbourne, won Best Drama at Oz International Film Festival, and is now streaming worldwide as well as being available on DVD throughout North America.
In 2018 and 2019 Ivan and Sarah embarked on another ambitious improvised feature called IN CORPORE, filming in Melbourne, Malta, New York and Berlin. Exploring the grey areas of relationships and expectations we place on ourselves and our partners, IN CORPORE launched on the Australian cinema-on-demand platform Lido at Home in November 2020.
2020 also saw Ivan produce and direct his third improvised feature, MACHINATION, a psychological drama / horror about an anxious woman struggling to cope in isolation as a pandemic sweeps the world. He would also produce his first feature documentary, CATS OF MALTA. Both films are due for release in 2022.
Since turning to improvised film in late 2016, Ivan hasn’t stopped sharing his love for the method. From 2019 and 2021 Ivan and Sarah filmed and released nine episodes of web series LIFE IMPROVISED, shot in Malta, Melbourne, Berlin, Lisbon and Zagreb. They also teach improvised film techniques, both online through Udemy and Skillshare, and through live workshops at schools, film events, and through Zoom.
Currently Ivan lives in Malta and continues to produce original improvised films through Nexus Production Group. IMPROV FOR INDIE FILMMAKERS is his first book.
