Jay grew up on the east coast of the United States. In his 20s, he moved to Ireland and later England. Most of his life has been spent abroad.
At university in Ireland, he met his wife,Mags. They moved to London after graduating and their three children – Hannah, Conor and Ben -- were born there. They eventually settled in Bristol which is where he teaches and writes now.
Jay is a graduate of Bath Spa University's MA in Writing for Young People.
Fire Boy is his first novel.
