Hi there!
My name's Jake--thanks for checking me out.
I like to wear a lot of hats:
** CEO of an investment management firm named Farnam Street Investments. Call it my "day job" and my original passion. I caught a lucky break and got to have lunch with Warren Buffett as a first-year MBA. I'd always loved investing and he was amazing. What wasn't so amazing was how I saw my friends and family treated by the finance industry. I couldn't stand by and watch, so I created a company to help them and it's taken off from there. Turns out treating people right and applying a business-person's approach to their investments is a decent recipe.
** Show Host of the author interview series Five Good Questions. I've always loved books, and I couldn't shake the feeling we were losing something important with the decline in long-form reading. Twitter's great, but there's something meditative about a good book. I created a show where I interview authors, giving them a chance to show they're actual humans. To keep focused, I limit the conversation to five questions. (Hopefully all good.)
** Adjunct Professor at UC Davis's Graduate School of Management. For four years, my business partner and I taught classes on value investing at our alma mater. It was a fun way to give back and the students were top-notch.
** Creator of the world's first hikecast, called "The Hikecast." (I know, very original.) I like to get outside and have deep conversations with interesting people. The idea is for you to put on this podcast, find some nature of your own, and simulate that you're walking along with us on the trail.
** Husband. My wife is a rockstar. After getting a Ph.D. in social psychology from UC Berkeley, she took some time off to birth two amazing little boys. With them both now in school, she's back to work in the health and fitness sphere as an expert on all things paleo and the ketogenic diet. She has three high-selling cookbooks for people looking to eat keto in a responsible, non-boring way. I'm relegated to #2 selling author in the Taylor house.
** Dad. We have two whip-smart boys at home--must take after mom. They love sports--that's from me. I do what I can to make all their practices and games and usually assistant coach. Fun side note: I've handled all aspects of producing The Rebel Allocator (writing, layout, cover, etc.) as a lesson to my boys that they can do anything they want if they're willing to put in the effort. There are no more gatekeepers. I'm not a creative person, so it's been interesting learning the ins and outs of taking a book from vague concept to tangible product all by yourself.
** Athlete. I hate the monotony of training for endurance sports. Yet I love doing destination challenges. There's no better way to see a new land than by foot. Quite the conundrum. My wife and I have done several local marathons and adventure races. We also did The Great Wall marathon in China, the Celtic Traverse (20 mi per day for a week around Ireland), and a half-Ironman in Coeur D'Alene.
Well, that's probably more than you ever wanted to know about me. If you have any other questions, I can be reached at fivegoodquestions@gmail.com.
Thanks!
Jake
