I am a citizen of three continents, having been born and lived my early life in the Netherlands (Kampen, Overijssel), grown up and been educated in Canada (University of British Columbia) and now having lived in Hong Kong for almost 40 years. By trade I am a journalist, writing a thrice weekly (for many years daily) column on finance and economics for Hong Kong's South China Morning Post. Earlier I worked as an Asian investment analyst for, among others, Morgan Stanley Asia and ABN Amro.
I have thoroughly enjoyed both of my different careers but what really inspires me these days is writing fiction on my theme of Old Stories Told Anew. There are things I want to say about the human species, about who we are and where we are going, and I think a grand way of doing it is through retelling old myths and fairy tales in a different setting with altered characters.
Other things about myself: My wife, Veronica, and I have three children, all grown-up and mostly still a little foot-loose although we bring them back home for Christmas every year. We live in Hong Kong's Repulse Bay in a wonderful seaside flat with a large recessed balcony that has space aplenty to serve both as our al fresco dining room and my study. It is where I do my writing or indulge my hobby of making detailed wooden models of sailing ships while Veronica works on her Chinese calligraphy and we listen to baroque music or audiobooks on the balcony stereo.
