Dr. Jan Canty, was the smaller twin who was born, raised, educated married, and widowed in Detroit. As a preemie, the doctors predicted she would "be slow." At age 29 she earned a Ph.D. She has always loved books. Her mother recalled she chewed the corners off them as a toddler! Dr. Canty has worked in clinical psychology for over thirty years in a private practice setting, large psychiatric hospital, teaching graduate school and consulting with attorneys and the federal government. She is drawn to international travel to far-flung places and incorporated her love of photography while exploring. She endangered her own life while in Iceland photographing a frozen waterfall and saved the life of a little boy while in Kenya who had taken ill and was listless in the tall grass when she literally stumbled across him. While in Moscow in 1986 touring psychiatric facilities she was threatened with arrest for taking a photo of a bridge but was fortunately seen as doing so out of ignorance for their laws and let go. Her love of the landscape and people of Guatemala made such a strong impact she wove those themes into her home and garden. Her debut book, "A Life Divided," was written from the vantage point of thirty years reflection. It spawned her podcast "The Domino Effect of Murder" which invites other homicide survivors to share their own survival story with others.
