With a B.A. in Outdoor Education and an M.S. in Experiential Education, Janet started the non-profit Four Corners School of Outdoor Education in 1984 – based on her love for the Colorado Plateau, desire to teach others about the need to understand and protect it, and belief in the power of place-based education to change lives. Prior to founding Four Corners School, she worked for over 15 years as a backcountry ranger and wilderness specialist for the National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, and U.S. Forest Service, and as an educator and guide for the National Outdoor Leadership School, Colorado Outward Bound, Prescott College, and other outdoor programs. She retired at the end of 2016 after completing the construction of the Canyon Country Discovery Center, a portal to place-based education about the Colorado Plateau and new campus for Four Corners School on 48 acres north of Monticello, Utah. Janet published numerous articles in professional journals over 32 years as Executive Director of Four Corners School of Outdoor Education. Over those years the School earned 21 local, regional, and national awards for its place-based education programs, including the 2002 Olympics Committee Spirit of the Land Award, 2001 Governor of Utah’s Medal for Science and Tech-nology (in science education), 2001 North American Association for Environmental Education for Out-standing Service to Environmental Education at the Regional Level, and 2005 Utah Society for Environmental Education’s Program and Educator of the Year. The Discovery and Learning Channels, CBS, NBC, and various newspapers have written about her work as a pioneer in outdoor, place-based, and environmental education.
