Living with a struggling mother wasn’t a smooth ride but she tried her best to take care of all of us and it wasn’t easy. Even up until this day it still isn't easy. Waking up every day I was mentally depressed seeing things that I want but can’t get, or seeing things that people have that I want but can’t afford. All because it wasn’t important or essential to the things that I needed, like something that I need to survive and can’t live without. For example, healthy food to eat. As a mother living pay check to pay check, she tried her hardest to make and have food for my brothers and I to eat every day. She made sure that we had clothes on our back, electricity every day, supplies for school, a roof over our heads or at least a place that we can call home. My mother frequently had conversations with us and explained to my brothers and me about her childhood struggles and that life is getting harder, more expensive and competitive. The society she lived in as a child growing up was very different than what it is now. Being equipped and being prepared for life’s swings is the best way to plan for the future because if not, you’ll be in for a rude awakening. My mother always said, “If you don’t work hard you will be living in your shoes”, but there is a wide door open and it is education. Attending school each and every day was one of her most important rules. Education is something that can take you far socially, physically, and mentally. People can take anything away from you, but one thing they won’t be able to take away from you is your knowledge. My mom didn't go to college and I used this as my motivation to attend college, and not only attend but evolve as well. My life will change with just the simple fact of me being myself instead of copying everyone else by doing the things they do, acting the way they act, or even talking the way that they talk. I was taught at a young age that all the people you call friends are not really your friends. Having a lot of friends is very risky to failure but having a lot of friends isn’t really a bad thing; but you have to be aware of the type of friends you make or associate yourself with. I'm not a quiet or shy person but I never really had or made a lot of friends. My brothers were all I really needed and they were my closest friends. They teach me right from wrong, encourage and motivate me when I’m down and never sugarcoat anything and always keep things straight forward. We even have similar interests and dreams. For example, we all plan to work together and open some type of family business. Being one of the oldest of my brothers, I feel as if it is my duty to make this dream come true. When asked the question, what do you want to be when you get older? Most people/children would say "just like my parents". I have plenty of motivations that motivate me to get through life. One of my biggest motivations is (not to grow up to be just like my parents, but to grow up to be better than my parents. "You have succeeded in life if you are better than your parents. But you fail if you are not". This is what I've heard and learned while growing up. Everyone has their own "rule of tom", and this is one of mine. I can't wait until the day that I'm able to go to my mom and say "mom we made it"! One Last Thing If there's any questions, comments, or feedback you have for me - feel free to contact me anytime.
