Seven-of-Ten Yes, life was challenging in the early years. As a child on the farm, we shared every corner of our three-room dwelling. The only bedroom was shared by my eight siblings—doubled up and stacked. If the weather proved warm the older boys could sleep in the barn or under the stars beside the Weeping Willow. My parents slept on a rollaway bed. A hanging sheet divided them from the other end of the kitchen. On my way to the outhouse in the dark, if the reach of my flashlight couldn’t identify animals prowling the grounds, my preschool mind knew better. Was it a skunk or weasel that had broken through the chicken coop and killed forty laying hens and left them strangled and strewn about in the dirt? Turns out it was a bobcat. Bossy, our Heifer, stood mooing at the gate every morning and evening waiting to give milk until the month we ran out of money for feed, and had to be sold. But at least we had heat and running water. It’s true we didn’t have much, in that tattered shack by the Snake River, but there was always the dream of something more. I still treasure the journey that taught me resilience, resourcefulness, and compassion, and can hardly wait to see what life will bring me next.
