Jeffrey J. Smith, PhD. Colonel Jeffrey Smith is the Commandant and Dean of the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies (SAASS), Air University, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama. SAASS is a highly-selective one-year graduate school with an interdisciplinary focus on the ideas and forces that inform the modern security environment. As Commandant and Dean, Colonel Smith is responsible for educating strategists who can optimize air, space, and cyberspace power for the Air Force and the nation. Col Smith was commissioned through Officer Training School in 1987. After attending pilot training at Williams AFB, he was assigned as a T-37 instructor pilot in the 455 FTS at Mather AFB, California. His next assignment took him to Malmstrom AFB, Montana, as a KC-135R pilot. He was then selected by the Air Force Institute of Technology to obtain a Master's Degree in Mathematics from the University of Colorado with a follow-on assignment as a mathematics professor and T-3 instructor pilot at the United States Air Force Academy. He left the Air Force Academy in 1999 after his selection to command the 37th Student Squadron at the Air and Space Basic Course, Maxwell AFB, Alabama. Following command, Col Smith attended Air Command and Staff College, graduating in June, 2001 with a Master of Science in Military Arts and Science. He then attended the School of Advanced Airpower Studies (SAAS) at Air University, graduating in June of 2002 with a Master of Science in Strategic Airpower Studies. Following SAAS, Col Smith became the Operations Officer for the 349th Air Refueling Squadron, McConnell AFB, Kansas. During this time, he was selected to command the 340th Expeditionary Air Refueling Squadron at Al Udeid AB, Qatar in support of both OIF and OEF missions where he flew and supervised over 250 combat missions. Col Smith assumed command of the 47th Operations Support Squadron at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas, on 26 July 2004 and concluded command on 12 Dec 2005. Following command, Col Smith transitioned to Headquarters Air Force, Pentagon, Washington D.C. as Deputy Chief Strategist for the Chief of Staff of the Air Force Think Tank--"Skunk Works." Col Smith was selected by the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans to obtain an in-residence PhD at Washington State University. Following completion of his doctorate, Col Smith transitioned to Air University, Maxwell AFB Alabama, as Chair, Department of International Security Studies. Col Smith took command of SAASS 15 June, 2012.
