Can a Panic Attack Stop Without Medication?
Panic attacks may be cured by a method of facing and accepting.
Many people experiencing panic attacks seek out non-medication ways to resolve anxiety issues. A panic attack is considered to be the most extreme form of worrying. Normally to remove an unwanted worry a person must find a way to resolve it. Could this logic be applied to a panic attack? Most panic sufferers are apprehensive about experiencing more panic attacks. Since apprehension is really worrying, how can a panic attack be resolved? Many sufferers have used the method of facing their panic sensations with a passive reaction of letting the panic do anything it wants for as long as it wants without conditions.
The Panic Switch by Jeffrey L. Hammes*, examines and describes the method of facing and accepting of the panic sensation while delving into related issues of anxiety, altered perceptions, conflicts, drug use and introspection.
"I eventually started to slip into an escalating feeling of panic/anxiety, and I finally decided to go with it. I thought: “Come on, give me your best shot. I can handle this. I always have, and always will... so bring it on!” I sat down and actually urged the symptoms to come on. I wanted to panic more and for the attack to become worse. It did not. It went away and I began laughing at the whole situation." (The Panic Switch, p.139)
A way to prove that a facing and accepting method can stop a panic attack is in trying to force a panic attack to come about. It turns out to be an impossible task. This supports the reasoning for trying a similar approach to a panic attack. Since a panic sensation is all about apprehension, the act of allowing the panic to occur could actually suppress the apprehension. With a successful experience, the sufferer could then apply this method to any future panic sensations.
"The minute I stopped caring about what would happen if I had a panic attack, I felt such a feeling of calm. I haven’t felt like this in longer than I can remember." (The Panic Switch, p.139)
