After over 10 years of teaching English; I know what works.
I’m English and have taught English to people from many different countries. I have taught in small/large schools, a University and privately. I was also a manager at an educational organisation for quite a long time.
I have always had a passion for words, languages and teaching and have been lucky enough to help 1000’s of people reach their goal of being fluent in English. I started by using normal textbooks but quickly noticed that the students were not improving very much. I did a lot of research and experimentation and discovered that this was because of a number of things:
Normal textbooks always explain grammar rather than teaching the student through examples. I found that students learn grammar naturally if they hear/read lots of different examples of that grammar (like they do with their own language). My books have 100’s of examples so you see how English is actually used and not just an ‘academic’ explanation. After all, you want to speak English not study it scientifically.
Normal textbooks are boring. I found that students often lost interest because the content in the text is boring. This makes studying feel like hard work rather than fun. I fill all of my books with fun examples/stories/exercises so the student learns naturally while having fun.
Once I knew what the problem was I started making my own teaching materials and the results were shocking! I started writing stories and examples that would help keep the students interested while teaching them English naturally. Students started improving very very quickly.
One last thing; I have studied a foreign language and I know that it is a long process, but I found it was much more interesting if I was learning naturally through interesting and engaging materials.
Good luck with your English learning and remember: keep it fun and interesting and you will get there.
