Goethe's masterpiece and perhaps the greatest work in German literature, Faust has made the legendary German alchemist one of the central myths of the Western world. Here indeed is a monumental Faust, an audacious man boldly wagering with the devil, Mephistopheles, that no magic, sensuality, experience or knowledge can lead him to a moment he would wish to last forever.

Das änderte sich mit der Zeit, nachdem sich Goethe näher über Schillers Werk informierte und beide in regen Gedankenaustausch traten, besonders in vorliegender Briefwechsel-Reihe.

Johann Wolfgang Goethe was a colossus of German literature and a true Renaissance man. A novelist, dramatist, poet, humanist, scientist and philosopher, he wrote the first international bestseller, The Sorrows of Young Werther, and his epic masterpiece Faust is one of the most famous and celebrated dramas of all time.

The Sorrows of Young Werther is a loosely based autobiographical novel by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It was first published in 1774 and is one of the most famous-and infamous-works in the history of literature. Werther, a sensitive young man falls in love with Lotte, a sweet-natured girl he meets while visitng an idyllic German village. Although Lotte is betrothed to Albert, Werther’s infatuation with her torments him to the point of despair and suicide.

Faust is a tragic play in two parts that reworks the late medieval myth of a brilliant but disillusioned scholar who makes a deal with the devil. Faust is considered by many to be Goethe's masterpiece and the greatest work of German literature. Part I sets out Faust’s despair, his pact with Mephistopheles, and his love for Gretchen. Part II deals with Faust’s life at court, the wooing and winning of Helen of Troy, and his purification and redemption.

Goethe as a novelist is best known for two earlier novels, The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774) and Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship (1796). But Elective Affinities, which was published in 1809, is widely regarded as his mature masterpiece, not least because of its unusual provenance, which brings together Goethe the scientist as well as Goethe the writer.

Die „Reiseblätter“ bestehen ausschließlich aus Briefen Goethes, in welchen er Freunden, Sympathisanten, Geistesverwandten und anderen nahestehenden Menschen seine Gedanken mitteilt. Da Goethes Intellekt sich gerne und ausgiebig mit interdisziplinären Gegenständen auseinandersetzte, wird der geneigte Zuhörer mit Themen aus Wissenschaft, Kunst, Kultur, Politik und Gesellschaft konfrontiert, in welchen das persönliche Verständnis und Verhältnis des Autors dazu im Vordergrund steht.

A literary celebrity by the age of 25, Goethe was ennobled by the Duke of Saxe-Weimar, Carl August in 1782 after first taking up residence there in November 1775 following the success of his first novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther. This Autobiography of Goethe has a lengthy introduction and short biography of Goethe's life by Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) and was translated by John Oxenford (1812-1877) in 1848, which was a year of revolutions in Europe. The Sorrows of Young Werther was Goethe's first major success, turning him from an unknown into a celebrated author practically overnight. Napoleon Bonaparte considered it one of the great works of European literature. He thought so highly of it that he wrote a soliloquy in Goethe's style in his youth and carried Werther with him on his campaigning to Egypt.

Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship was Goethe’s second novel, published 1795-6, almost two decades after The Sorrows of Young Werther. It again focuses on a young man but this time on his growing understanding and maturity as he makes his way in the world. As such, it is regarded as the founding work in the ‘coming of age’ genre: the ‘bildungsroman’ ( a term actually coined some 30 years later), which characterised a philosophical novel tracing the cultural, emotional and educational development of an individual from youth to adulthood.

Graf Egmont ist bei seinem niederländischen Volk äußerst beliebt, da er mit seiner entspannten Art der Herrschaft die spanische Besatzung fast vergessen macht. Jedoch: seine Art ist dem spanischen König ein Dorn im Auge, der den strengen Herzog von Alba schickt, um hart aufzuräumen. Egmont erkennt die drohende Gefahr nicht und wähnt sich durch die Unterstützung des Volkes in Sicherheit. Doch Albas Schreckensregime lässt ihn erkennen, dass im Augenblick der Wahrheit der Mensch sich selbst der Nächste ist.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe ist wohl zweifellos Deutschlands berühmtester Dichter. Seine bekanntesten Gedichte sind - im Vergleich beispielsweise zu Schiller - auffallend kurz. Wie kein anderer konnte er mit wenigen Worte ganze Gefühlswelten transportieren, wie diese zehn Werke zeigen: Der Zauberlehrling, Gefunden, An den Mond, Prometheus, Ganymed, Wer nie sein Brot mit Tränen aß, Lied der Parzen, Das Göttliche, Willkommen und Abschied, Osterspaziergang (aus Faust: Der Tragödie erster Teil).

14.10.1771: Der junge Goethe, 22 Jahre alt, hält eine selbstverfasste Rede auf William Shakespeare anlässlich des Shakespeare-Tages in Frankfurt/Main. Er hält sie im Familienkreis, nimmt kein Blatt vor den Mund und erklärt, warum der Barde aus Stratford-upon-Avon so wichtig für die Entwicklung des Dramas in der Sturm und Drang-Zeit war. Shakespeare räumte auf mit der aristotelischen Dramenkonzeption der Einheit von Ort, Zeit und Raum und gab den Autoren erst dadurch die wahre künstlerische Freiheit. Ein äußerst bedeutsamer Grundlagentext der Literaturgeschichte!

Werther, a sensitive young artist, finds himself in Wahlheim, a quiet, attractive village in Germany where he seeks solace from the turmoils of love. Faust is one of the pillars of Western literature. This classic drama presents the story of the scholar Faust, tempted into a contract with the Devil in return for a life of sensuality and power. Enjoyment rules, until Faust’s emotions are stirred by a meeting with Gretchen, and the tragic outcome brings Part 1 to an end. Part 2, written much later in Goethe’s life, places his eponymous hero in a variety of unexpected circumstances, causing him to reflect on humanity and its attitudes to life and death.
