John Spencer is a retired U.S. Army officer that served 25 years leading men and women of the Armed Services. He was assigned to units at every level of the military. From being a member of a squad in the jungles of Panama to commanding over a hundred and fifty soldiers in intense combat in Iraq. From serving in the Pentagon to teaching and researching war at the United States Military Academy. Spencer enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1993 and retired in 2018. He began his military career as an enlisted soldier in the Infantry holding ranks of private to sergeant first class. He was commissioned as an officer in 2002 and rose from lieutenant to major while serving in Ranger, Airborne, light Infantry, and mechanized Infantry units. His assignments as an officer included two combat deployments to Iraq as both an Infantry platoon leader and company commander, instructor with the Army’s Ranger School, Joint Chiefs of Staff and Army Staff intern, fellow with the Chief of Staff of the Army’s Strategic Studies Group, and instructor at the Army’s military academy at West Point. He currently serves as the Chair of Urban Warfare Studies at the Modern War Institute, a research center he co-founded at the United States Military Academy.
