Juana Rosa Pita (b. Havana, Dec. 8,1939) is a poet, writer, editor and translator. Having left Cuba in 1961, she began her journey as a poet in 1974, successively in Washington (obtained a PhD from Catholic Univ, of America), Madrid, New Orleans, Miami and Boston, where she resides since 2005. Awarded in 1975 the First Prize of Poetry for Latin America from the ICH of Málaga, she has since then published 30 books of poetry, among them: El arca de los sueños (1978), Viajes de Penélope (1980)/ Penelope's Journey (2011), Plaza sitiada (1987), Sorbos de luz/Sips of Light (1990), Una estación en tren (1994) –‘Premio Letras de Oro’ (1993)–, Tela de concierto (1999), El ángel sonriente/ L’angelo sorridente (2013), Leggendario ‘entanglement’ (2015), and Se desata el milagro/ Si scatena il miracolo (2016). For her body of work, she has received prizes such as the ‘Premio Internazionale Ultimo Novecento’ (Pisa, 1985). Extensively studied and translated into five languages, her poems have been featured in anthologies such as New Directions in Prose and Poetry 49 (New York,1985); translated by Donald D. Walsh; and Otra Cuba secreta (Madrid, 2011). She delights in the spirit of Italy and the music of Chopin.
