I began my 34-year legal career as a public defender in Louisville, Kentucky, before moving to Wisconsin, where I served as a prosecutor until I retired in 2011. During my time as a practicing attorney, I defended and prosecuted thousands of cases, from the mundane to the macabre. Even with deep roots in Kentucky, the north woods eventually compelled me to leave behind the nation's blue grass for the sand counties of Central Wisconsin, where I now call home. After retiring, I remained active for some time in Southern Wisconsin's drug courts, while concurrently transitioning from real lawyer to real author. My experience as both a public defender and prosecutor has provided fertile background to provide commentary on the criminal justice system through the medium of novel. I've lived and traveled extensively in France and am a fluent speaker of the language. As part of my interest in France, I've extensively studied the French criminal justice system. To date, I've published two novels. Real Lawyers is the story of a newbie public defender who quickly learns that criminal intent sits on both sides of the bench. Chez Betty is the story of a geeky lawyer going through a mid-life crisis framed for murder by forces he does not understand.
