Kim, by another name, was born to the world in the early 1960’s in a small town in Michigan. From her earliest memories she knew she was not the same as her friends. Though participating in a lot of stereotypical male activities, she was a loner. Her true desire was to be like the girls, to dress in the fun, frilly things that made them all so beautiful, and seemingly happy. Kim wasn’t happy. Throughout her school years her head was not in the game, so to speak, with being the man she was expected to be. When she was at home, she would often spend hours in her room with a stolen pair of pantyhose, and a skirt made from a towel or pillowcase.
At the age of twenty, she followed the path of her brothers and joined the Navy. Shortly before her enlistment was up she ended up meeting what would be his first wife; someone that was very comfortable with the idea of her dressing as a women before the wedding, but once they were officially man and wife suddenly it was an issue. He ended up reenlisting for four more years at her insistence. But two years into the reenlistment, the marriage began falling apart.
The marriage ended badly, as most marriages that end do, but while Kim was in San Diego, Ca she found a group called The Neutral Corner, and with that the realization, and relief that she was not alone took a massive weight off her shoulders.
Though still in the navy, she became very active in the group, attending meetings, doing the newsletter, and eventually becoming Secretary.
Secretly, she found a source to begin taking unprescribed hormones, and was thrilled that after only a few months she could see breast growth. It was even starting to show in her uniform, with her shirts become tight around the chest area.
By 1992 her enlistment was up, and the prospect of staying in San Diego and going through the change before her, she chickened out. She packed up her things and moved back home to Michigan. For a brief period, she saw a therapist about her issues, but it was not the same.
A few years later she met the girl that would become her second, and final wife. She made sure she knew everything about her. They married, had two children together, and spent the next twenty years as a warm happy family. But deep down, the old demons were still haunting Kim.
When the last child graduated and moved out of the house, Kim’s wife surprised her with a skirt and top of her own. She cried. Never would she have thought that her wife would care so much for her to do this. In the following months she has gone on to take prescribed hormones and testosterone blockers. Though she had written numerous other books by her given male name, Sarah’s Mirror was her first book directed at the transgender audience. At the age of 57, Kim is reborn.
Bless all those that suffer and deal with gender dysphoria.
