LMSW (she/her) has been featured as America’s go-to Leading LGBT+ Expert in The New York Times, ABC News, Yahoo!, and CNN. She is a cast member on season 7 of TLC's "I Am Jazz." In addition, her writing has also appeared in the Journal of Nonprofit Education and Leadership, Huffington Post, International Council of Professors of Educational Leadership, The New Social Worker Magazine, and many more.
Dr. Kryss is known for helping businesses address their unique Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion needs in an approachable, manageable and actionable way. This includes alterations to physical spaces, updating hiring practices, re-drafting policies and procedures and more. Shane holds two master’s degrees, two licenses to practice mental healthcare, and a PhD in Leadership while serving as a Lecturer, Adjunct Professor, and Field Liaison at Columbia University, Fordham University, UMass Global, and National Louis University.
She is the author of Creating an LGBT+ Inclusive Workplace: The Practical Resource Guide for Business Leaders, which provides best practices and professional guidance for creating LGBT+ inclusive workplaces, including creating safer working environments, updating company policies, enhancing continuing education and training, and better supporting LGBT+ people in the workplace training and other tangible ways to support LGBT+ people in the workplace. She is also the author of The Educator's Guide to LGBT+ Inclusion, the first book of its kind to guide educators, administrators, and school staff to become able and empowered to make their schools more LGBT+ inclusive.
Dr. Kryss earned her Bachelor of Science degree at The Ohio State University in the field of Human Development and Family Sciences, her first Master’s degree in the field of Social Work at Barry University, and her second Master’s degree in the field of Education, specializing in Curriculum and Instruction at Western Governor’s University. She has completed numerous additional trainings specific to teaching at the collegiate level, specializing in online education from Columbia University. She has completed her Doctorate in Leadership, where she continues to focus on how to best educate people about LGBT+ inclusion and affirmation. Dr. Kryss holds social work licenses in the states of Ohio and New York, as well as numerous certifications in topics including providing online-specific education, mental healthcare and LGBT+ youth, suicide prevention, and many many more.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kryss has aided in the introduction of Gay Straight Alliances in numerous high schools, participated in the National Equality March in Washington, D.C., rallied for non-discrimination laws in numerous states, and has held or actively participated in meetings with numerous legislators to educate and encourage their participation in the Equality Movement. She has worked in concert with numerous equality-based organizations in a variety of roles to support, affirm, and celebrate the LGBT+ community. It is believed that Dr. Kryss is the first person to get a rainbow pride flag included in a country music video; an image of her in front of a rainbow flag and wearing a Harvey Milk t-shirt while participating in the 2009 National Equality March was included in the 2019 lyric video for Trisha Yearwood’s “Every Girl in This Town.”
Dr. Kryss is well-versed in the areas of sexual and gender minorities, including historical and current research. She has significant experience working with transgender youth, transgender military servicemembers, LGBT+ people struggling with suicidality, and others. This provides the foundation she uses to educate and guide professionals to better understand, accept, and communicate about and alongside the LGBT+ community. She continues to actively advocate for LGBT+ rights on the local, state, federal, and international levels.
In addition to being known for her work in the LGBT+ field, she is almost equally known for her lifelong love of tie dye (making her easy to spot in a crowd or at an event) and her never-ending adoration of NYC pizza.
