Lisa and her five siblings grew up in a blended, working class family. Reading together was family bonding time. Lisa says, "When we read together, there were no differences in ages, backgrounds, or who belonged to whom. We were simply one family." This became the inspiration for the Zebecs series of books, which are designed to be a shared experience between the young and the young at heart. Lisa's writing journey began when she was in college at the urging of her father. "I used an old Royal typewriter, the kind with the big keys, no correction tape, and that pesky 'E' key that always stuck. I still have the original manuscript." The paper has yellowed and become brittle over the years. But to Lisa, it is a tangible memory representing the unguarded and passionate optimism of youth. Some of her fondest childhood memories are sitting in the lap of one of her parents and reading a book together. "I can still hear the cadence of my mother's heart beat where my head rested on her chest while caught up in the world of my imagination. My love of reading and writing began in those moments, and that is why book is designed to be a shared experience." Lisa is creating a movement to connect families and celebrate children and she does this by breaking the rules, teaching children to love to learn and adults to recognize what is right about them. Just like the characters in her books, Lisa celebrates the unique 'backstories' of families. "We all have a backstory that is uniquely ours and it has the power to impact our future. When we begin to own our personal story, we grow as a family." Lisa is passionate about helping children to find their voice while giving parents and educators the resources they need to cultivate that voice. "Each child, and for that matter, each adult, has natural strengths. When we honor those innate strengths, we find our voice. When we bury or ignore those strengths, often times because of cultural expectations or misguided direction, we loose our voice. In the end, our communities suffer." Lisa invites you to break the rules and join the journey. "When families connect and children are celebrated, we all are rewarded and it reflects upon how we operate as a world community. But it starts with the children, we must start with the children." A large part of making this dream a reality has been the help of her illustrator Robert Flesch whose illustrative magic brought the Zebecs to life.
