Fighting for Success is a true story about how I changed my life in my mid-fifties to give me a better work/life balance. Many people are fascinated by how I became involved in the Muay Thai business in Thailand. They have encouraged me to write about my experiences to provide inspiration to others wishing to change the direction of their lives.
The Covid_19 pandemic not only gave me the time to write, it gave me the motivation too. In the early stages of the Pandemic, Thailand effectively closed its international borders (March 2020). Tourism businesses in Thailand, including our own, had their main source of income cut-off without notice. The livelihoods of local Thai people, migrant workers, and business owners were severely compromised. At Sumalee Phuket we wanted to protect our employees in whatever way we could, knowing that without our employment they had nowhere else to turn. We helped wherever we could. My daughter Rhian started fundraising and worked to support the families of migrant workers within our community. I came up with the idea of writing Fighting for Success, posting a chapter a month on a platform sponsors could subscribe to. Many of our supporters from around the world gave generously. It was through their generosity that we were able to retain those staff who wished to continue working during this period. The book itself is a culmination of all this effort. The proceeds will continue to be used to support our staff until such time as the economic situation in Thailand improves.
I originate from the valleys of South Wales in the UK. Before relocating to Thailand, I spent most of my working life living in the New Forest, Hampshire, also in the UK. I was awarded a PhD for my research in Psychology by the University of Wales (Swansea). Much later in life I obtained with a Postgraduate Diploma in Digital Marketing from the Institute of Digital Marketing. I began my career as a Research Scientist working for a multinational FMCG company. I subsequently established my own independent research consultancy, Miller Associates, successfully working with both public and private sector clients over a period of twenty-five years. In 2009, I left the UK, with my daughter, Rhian, for a one-year sabbatical in Phuket, Thailand. I have remained in Thailand ever since. In 2011 I opened the now internationally renowned Sumalee Boxing Gym with Rhian. Concurrently we have developed our understanding of Thai culture and Thai language. Rhian is now a qualified Thai language interpreter (DPSI Law). My son, Sam, was also involved in the Sumalee business at the outset and now lives and works in Hong Kong.
