My Global Maddy Webpage is entitled "Writer, Educator, World Traveler." Friends envy my 64 destinations abroad (I tend to weigh the ones I've been to multiple times -- Norway, Sweden, Japan, India, Lesotho, South Africa, or whose languages I've studied), but I think of myself as a Woman of the Midwest. I was born in Texas, raised in Oklahoma, first went to college in Iowa, then landed in Wisconsin. That's a path straight north, 100% midwest. My first trip out of the USA wasn't until I was 22 years old - to Mexico, where I was stunned at the difference in lifestyles, so close to our borders - but it was there I caught the "the people-to-people" cultural exploration bug. I landed wonderful jobs at Folklore Village folkarts center in Dodgeville, Wisconsin, at Wisconsin's state education agency as its first-ever International Education Consultant, and then the Peace Corps, as Volunteer and staff, a head-spinning opportunity to see the non-wealthy world. I'm finding that writing is its own journey, with just as many (challenging) mountains, (depressing) valleys, and (endurance-testing) long-distance treks. I'm glad you've found my writing, and I'd be happy to hear your comments.
