I'm a writer, artist, avid filmgoer and lover of nature.
As a reader I love non-fiction and especially biographies, as well as novels, and recently savored The Overstory by Richard Powers, Full Metal Jacket Diary by Matthew Modine, Edith Wharton's The Age of Innocence, and M Train by Patti Smith.
Some of my favorite movies across the decades are Laura, The Long Goodbye, Adaptation, Sofia Coppola's Somewhere, Leave No Trace, Barry Jenkins's luminous If Beale Street Could Talk, and Pig, directed by Michael Sarnoski. In Alien in the Mirror I managed to slip in explorations of a number of my favorite science fictions movies, new and old, dating back to childhood. I grew up glued to The Twilight Zone. 2019's "The Vast of Night" harks back to 50s SF and delights me. My favorite film, in or out of science fiction, is Blade Runner.
My first gig as a film writer was for Andy Warhol's Interview, as it was called at the time, writing reviews and interviews.
Alien in the Mirror is my first non-fiction book. Other publications include three novels, poetry, and essays.
I've taught writing and film at University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) and at
American Music and Drama Academy (AMDA) in Hollywood.
I hope you enjoy Alien in the Mirror. I wrote this book for fans of science fiction and science fiction cinema, admirers of the work of Scarlett Johansson and of Jonathan Glazer, and of course, for film lovers.
