Mel Jackson was born in 1950 in Columbus, Ohio, grew up in the city and in rural southern Ohio. His father held many different jobs. Mel served in the military in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. He worked as a circus promoter, a juvenile probation officer, and radio broadcaster. His daughter presented him with a diary on Father’s Day and asked if he would leave a legacy of words, memories to read to her children after he was long gone. He decided to do that and also acquaint her with his father, whom she had never known. The book "Runaway" was an attempt to set to paper an experience that, to a young boy, made no sense. It aim was to inform, sadden and also amuse. It was not meant to vilify a father, but to only describe a young boy’s longing for the love of his father. Mel resides with his wife and daughter in Florida.
