Melvin Bolton was born in Lancashire in 1938, but since 1960 he has mostly worked and lived overseas. His work as an ecologist has taken him to some of the most remote parts of Africa, Asia and the South Pacific, though he and his family are now settled in Australia. Over the years, Melvin has written a number of books in widely different genres, ranging from travel/natural history ("Ethiopian Wildlands" 1976) through crime fiction, popular science and academic texts, to his very recent output - simply entitled "Zee". This is a paperback best categorized as hard science fiction in that the story is entirely fictitious but the science behind it has been carefully researched. Melvin is firmly of the opinion that books with a serious purpose need not always be dull. He and his wife, Jean, who is a literacy specialist, developed a series of illustrated story books and other materials (the "Huntsman's Lodge" series) in which the main characters are comical spiders. Younger readers tend to get caught up in the drama while older students can appreciate the fun. Relevant cartoons are also scattered through Melvin's own educational books for secondary school students - the "Deeper Insights" series. These deal with selected topics in the natural sciences. Facts can be depressing, says Melvin, but when it can managed, lightening up and having a chuckle can be quite beneficial.
