I was born in Grants, New Mexico during the uranium boom days. My dad was a telephone man and my mom worked for a local doctor. I don't remember much about that place, we moved when I was three to Clovis, New Mexico. For those that don't know much about New Mexico let me give a description. Grants was located on the North West side of the state and Clovis is located on the east side of the state, almost into Texas. From Indians to Cowboys would be fair in describing the differences. I was a TV kid and John Wayne fan, so during my play I would pretend to be characters I saw on the tube or the big screen.
What I've found out in life is to listen to people and their stories, especially with older people. Where I came from it was rough to say the least. Men made a living by the sweat of their brow and a strong back, and ones word was all they had, along with a firm handshake. My story Arch is based off the relationships I've made over the years and the colorful characters and mannerism they possessed. Although the story is fictional there is a taste of truth to it. No matter how smart we think we are the same human condition still plays out today.
We have since moved to Northeast Ohio and the friends we've made find our stories about the Southwest unbelievable. The horrible wind storms and tumbleweeds, they never heard of tumbleweeds! The vastness of the landscape and the lack of water that plagues most of the state, and the delicious Mexican food. You can go to Portales today and all of the locations in the book Arch can be found. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did writing it.
