Mike Matsuno is from Honolulu, Hawaii, and is a 4th generation, Japanese American. He left Hawaii to attend college in Oregon. In his junior year, he went on a study abroad program to Japan. After graduating from college, he headed north to work and experience Alaska. Mike then returned to teach English in Japan. After six years of teaching and experiencing kayaking and skiing in Japan, he left Japan for a six-month adventure, traveling throughout Asia. Mike then returned to graduate school at the University of Hawaii at Manoa for a master's degree in Asian Studies and after entered Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan for another master's degree in communications and journalism.
He would later return to Alaska to work as a northern lights tour coordinator for Japanese. After the winter season, he taught Japanese, Asian American history, and Japanese culture at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) while running a bed and breakfast, transportation and tour company, and gift shop. He would then be called back to Japan to take a dual position as the Director of the International Center and an associate professor at Osaka Gakuin University. His parents both became seriously ill in Honolulu and five years ago he left the university so he could help care for his parents. He presently works in study abroad, intercultural and leadership training, teaches soft skills/life skills, and facilitates and advises on the Ship for World Youth which is the Japanese Prime Minister's Cabinet Office global leadership program. He lives in both Kyoto, Japan and Fairbanks, Alaska while frequently visiting Hawaii 3-4 times a year to help care for his parents.
Mike's life passion has always been about inspiring and educating young people and creating innovative ways for them to learn, reflect, and grow as independent thinkers and team players and who have acquired the leadership qualities of empathy, humility, and integrity.
